A portrait of Zora Neale Hurston, taken by Carl Van Vechten. This portrait is a part of Van Vechten's collection "Famous People," and taken in 1938. When reading any text, it is important to be able to identify the author. The theme of this project it identity itself. Hurston, much like her character Janie in Their Eyes Were Watching God, is a light-skinned Black woman. Her life, and experiences as a Black woman, directly influenced much of her writing. Furthermore, much of her literature is still discussed today.
